Sport Overview

A martial art originating in Japan, Judo is a sport that places great value on developing a spirit of respect as represented by the expression “Judo begins with a bow and ends with a bow”. The first competitor to earn an “ippon” wins the match. A competitor can earn an ippon by successfully executing a technique and subduing the opponent. A “waza-ari” is awarded when a technique does not meet all the requirements for an ippon, and two waza-ari are equivalent to an ippon.

Performance will be marked and evaluated.
The KATA competition will consist of seven events (techniques): Nage-no-Kata (Forms of Throwing), Katame-no-Kata (Forms of Grappling or Holding), Kime-no-Kata (Forms of Decisive techniques), Ju-no-Kata (Forms of Gentleness & Flexibility), Kodokan Goshin-jutsu (Forms of Kodokan Self-Defense), Itsutsu-no-Kata (Forms of 'Five') and Koshiki-no-Kata (Forms of Classics).
The performance order will be posted at the competition venue by the afternoon on the day before the competition.

If there are three participants, they will play in a round robin format. For all other categories, an elimination tournament (direct knockout) format will apply. No consolation (repechage) matches will be held.
